"We make up horrors to help us cope with the real
ones." -Stephen King
Dear Reader,
I decided to explore the topic of women in horror, specifically the manner in which women are treated and the standards they are held to. Horror movies are mainly for entertainment, yet they are also used to indicate current social ideology and often deal with issues of race and gender, as the two often intersect. Although there are indications that progress is being made for women in horror, the current state of the film industry does not allow for equal expression when comparing men and women. It is important to also note that this disparity only increases when looking at women of color in Hollywood. I express my opinions on this topic in several ways, mainly by creating a storyline that connects a case study and news article. I also wrote a poem about the persecution of sexually expressive women in horror, it was accompanied with an illustration. |
